The Kabaddi League

Scottish Kabaddi

Who are they?

Kabaddi Scotland’s formation stemmed from an invitation in 2011. The Punjab Government of India requested a development team from Scotland to participate in the 2012 Kabaddi World Cup held in India. Recognising this exceptional opportunity, Kabaddi Scotland swiftly initiated player recruitment. Their initial squad drew talent from the armed services and Strathclyde University rugby teams. From then Scottish Kabaddi has taken on the lead role in a collaborative effort with Kabaddi England to distribute and create access to Kabaddi in the UK and across Europe.

Their History

Kabaddi Scotland’s dedication to the sport goes beyond competing in World Cups and European Championships. They have actively shaped Kabaddi’s development and championed inclusivity within the sport. Their progressive attitude was evident in 2019 when they spearheaded the organisation of the inaugural European Kabaddi Championships. This event significantly boosted Kabaddi’s growth across the continent and opened up opportunities for financial independence of the sport. Their ability to secure independent funding for the European Championships has demonstrated a commitment to self-sufficiency and responsible resource management towards the popularisation and commercialisation of the sport to mainstream spectators.

Furthermore, Kabaddi Scotland partnered with Kabaddi England to launch the British Kabaddi League (BKL) in 2021. This national competition platform provides a crucial stage for Kabaddi athletes across the UK – it’s noteworthy that Kabaddi Scotland has taken the lead role in this collaborative effort, solidifying their leadership position within the sport. However, they haven’t stopped there they are currently working with Scottish Universities to launch the UK’s first university Kabaddi league, providing a platform for student participation and expanding the sport’s reach.

Kabaddi Scotland’s vision extends beyond competition. They are actively partnering with national supporters and funders to position Kabaddi as the UK’s first truly ethnically diverse sport. This commitment to inclusivity is further emphasised by their development of comprehensive strategies for community engagement and implementation of corporate social responsibility initiatives. By taking these initiatives, Kabaddi Scotland has become a leader not only in growing the sport but also in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants. Their dedication extends beyond competition, aiming to leverage Kabaddi as a force for positive social change – inspiring communities.
